The Crusading Couch episode 6: game reviews!

April’s episode of The Crusading Couch is here and ready for the listeners!
This month we tested out a new episode format where we review (for lack of a better word) three RPGs. We outlined their settings, touched on the rules, discussed the various pro’s and con’s of the games, and then suggest who might enjoy these games.

The three games we talked about were: Eclipse Phase, New World of Darkness, and Star Wars: Edge of the Empire.

Reminder that tomorrow is the last day of this months writing challenge. Raymond feels a little behind so he’s got a lot of typing to do today!

Eclipse Phase: Fast Extraction.


This week we’ve got a nice short Eclipse Phase scenario that i just sort of whacked together. It’s a Martian Train heist, to kidnap a Jovian VIP. there are some references to our eCOPse phase games(new one in may).

This is only the second game I’ve ever run online. I’ve played in a couple of online games lately and it removes some of the scheduling issues of a normal in person TTRPG run. This was probably the most linear scenario I’ve ever run, and the shortest; in spite of that i kinda loved it. I hope to run more online games in the future.

The Quiet Year: Bears. Bears Everywhere.


This weeks podcast is another recording we made on International Table Top day, our second game of The Quiet Year.

Raymond helped run this game as we had five players. Things went off the rails pretty hard at times, but it was all good fun.

Geek Out!: International Table Top Day Edition

A special irregular upload to celebrate International Table Top Day!

We’ve played a lot of games today, but the one we decided to share with you was Geek Out!

Geek Out! is a geek trivia and bidding game, where you leverage your knowledge of geeky subjects to out compete your “friends”. Topics range from black and white science fiction movies to famous actors’ roles. It’s great game for both small and large groups, and we recommend you play it at your next games night.

We had a truck load of fun playing and we hope that you have an equally enjoyable time listening.

Famous(ish) people I’d like to role play with

It’s about 10pm here is the land of Oz, and yet it feels like 3am because my brothers children woke me an hour early.

So I thought I’d make a list of famous people, of varying levels of fame, who I’d like to play a role playing game with. These are in no specific order, and some of these people will no doubt have never played an RPG, but here we go.

  • Ross Payton of RPPR. Technically he ran a game I played in, but still; i want to do it again.
  • Caleb Stokes of RPPR, I love all the guys and gals at RPPR but Caleb is the GM I wish I was. sadly I would need to change too much about who I am to get into doing that much planning.
  • Matt Easton of schola gladiatoria. I just find him an interesting bloke, and I think he’d be down for it.
  • Hank Green of vlogbrothers, Sci-show, and much more. I’m a long time nerd fighter and I’ve always enjoyed Hank’s videos more than John’s (though I love John’s as well). Add to the fact he’s about to be on RPG show with Wil Wheaton.
  • Vin Diesel. Probably one of the most famous DnD players around, I have no idea if that is a thing he is still into but man…if he is.
  • Adam Savage of mythbusters acclaim. He is a really creative personality, and I feel like if you could get him to embrace the hobby he could have a lot of fun with it.
  • Will and Norm of Tested.com. They have never played an TRPG, which seems odd considering their job as professional (and I kind of hate this word) nerds.
  • (This one is someone very few people would consider famous, but he is more well known than any of my other friends) Craig Page. He wrote a kind of well known paper on Jedi lightsaber forms, he also works for the dresden files larp.
  • Joerg of The Slingshot Channel. He’s a bit of a mad genius and I feel like he would be a lot of fun.
  • Mike Rugnetta of PBS idea channel. Oh man, I could fucking die happy. When I learnt Mike played Shadow Run, it made me rethink my decision not to get into shadow run. Kim and I both LOVE idea channel.
  • This isn’t really a famous person, but one of the minds behind Eclipse Phase. I have never been so enthralled by an RPG setting before, I’d love to see how they run it.
  • Michael Shean, Who is an author I have never read but have become friends with on tumblr… I should really read one of his books.

I don’t know, just some thoughts I had. I might add more to the list as I think of more. For now that will do.

Pendragon: The Golden Hare Hunt.

This weeks game is Pendragon. Pendragon is kind of unique in role playing games in that it has an ultra-specialised setting and focus. In this game you play as a member of King Arthur’s court, either a lady or a knight. You can customise your character background and heritage in many ways, but you are still either a knight, or a lady. Knights, by the way, can be female or male or anything in between. Our Players all chose to be male knights, and elected to begin play in the relativity peaceful Tournament Period of Arthur’s reign.

Our first game takes place just a few days after the PC’s have been officially knighted. They are attending a Hunt held in the Queen’s honour. I really enjoyed running this game, and the players seemed to dig it as well. We look forward to running it again next month.

The Crusading Couch episode 5: player conflict

In this months episode of The Crusading Couch; Billy asks Kim and Raymond about player conflict and party disputes.
We discuss arguments over loot division, as well as GM’s trying too hard to please everyone. We also come back to a few themes from earlier episodes and view them in a new light. All in all, we think it’s an entertaining episode.
