We’ve spoken about about Zak and his lackeys pretty much whenever they have popped up in TTRPG news. We’ve warned you against giving him money, against buying games he worked on, even asked you to question your support of his defenders. Yesterday Mandy sparked a wave of conversations in our community by being the latest brave soul to speak out about their abuse at the hands of Zak S. If you want to read that account you can find it here, but it comes with almost every content warning that there could be.
We’re not big influencers on the community, but we’ve made our position known. We speak out against the cultural standards that have lead to this asshole getting work, support, and awards. I’ve questioned peoples love of key industry figures based on said figures support of Zak S. Figures like Ken Hite. Companies like White Wolf, Paradox, and Wizards of the Coast.
I’d rather be poor than work with collaborators, but I have that luxury.
We’ll be exerting whatever power we have to make changes in our culture. As a survivor of sexual assault I am aware of the damage it can do. The cultural pressures involved. We have to work to call that shit out.
I don’t have a specific call to action here, this is more about us being clear to you. We don’t support abusers. We don’t protect abusers. If you look at what Zak has done and can see reflections of your own behaviour, it is well past the time for you to start making amends.
We’re going to be spending the rest of this week celebrating the good in this community. The release of so many fantastic mech games, and the interview Alice did with us. We’ll be thinking about how to help those that have been hurt, but for my own health I need to to be making positive moves this week.
